Obituary of James Jim Edmison KERR

April 8, 1936 – November 20, 2011 James “Jim” Edmison Kerr of Calgary, passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at the age of 75 years. Jim was born on April 8, 1936 in Wilcox, SK. Following the death of his father in 1942, his family moved to Shaunavon, SK. Jim spent his school aged years in Shaunavon where he developed his love of hockey and strong work ethic. He went on to study engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. Jim began his working career with A. W. Homme Ltd. in Calgary and later Winnipeg. He soon after returned to Calgary where he started Prairie Oil Services with his partner Tom Popowich. In addition to running his business and raising his family, Jim was actively involved in the Calgary hockey community. He was also a dedicated volunteer in the Lake Bonavista Community Association and its sports programs. Jim was instrumental in the planning and construction of the Lake Bonavista Recreation Centre in the 1970’s. In recent years, he has been filled with immense pride watching his grandchildren play hockey in that same facility. In his retirement, Jim enjoyed playing golf, swapping stories with friends over a coffee or lunch and trips back to Shaunavon, staying connected with his home town. Jim was also his grandkids’ staunchest supporter, spending many hours in the rink, at the soccer pitch, or wherever his grandchildren were playing the games they love. Jim is survived by his three children, Randy (Karin) Kerr, Rhonda Kerr and Rachelle (Shane) Ellis, and their mother Margaret Evans; and his nine grandchildren, Jenessa, Kevin and Chad Kerr; Grace, Reilly, and Sam Matthews and Jack, Owen and Amy Ellis. He is also survived by two sisters, Ida Grace Long of Manitou Beach, SK and her children Barbara (Garth) and Rick (Shauna), and Pam (Alvin) McKee of Saskatoon, SK and her children Greg (Sharlene) and Tara (Dava); and many great nieces and nephews and close friends. Jim was predeceased by his mother Esther; father James; brother Cyril; and infant sister Beverley.
