Obituary of Kathleen DOBBS

August 3, 1917 – November 5, 2011 Kay Dobbs died peacefully, with family by her side, on Saturday, November 5, 2011. She was a mild mannered and very nice woman whose time had come. She was 94 years old. She was famous for her “sky high” angel food cake, a standard at all birthdays. Her pie crusts were as light and flaky as the ingredient suppliers said they should be. And there were cookies, always lots of different kinds, in a grab bag of battered cookie tins. She was a keen member of a book club for over 50 years. In later years it became more of an excuse for a luncheon and pleasant chit-chat. She was no slouch with her sewing either. She took a tailoring course at a community college and then proceeded to make her own and her daughters’ clothes. One notable piece was an ‘Eskimo’ coat complete with fur trimmed hood and appliquéd ptarmigan birds. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Eric (Dr.) whom she met at the Manitoba General Hospital, as a recent RN graduate. She is survived by her two daughters, Susan Perrett (Bob) of Princeton, NJ and Nancy Follett (Ian) of Calgary and by her grandsons BJ Perrett (Krista) and Kyle Perrett of San Francisco. Her family thanks Ronnee Poitras and Karen Gallagher, Kay’s long term live-in caregivers, who not only helped Kay, but loved her. Not to be forgotten, Kay loved ‘Duchess’ an affectionate but lazy and very overweight cat. She blamed her husband for feeding the cat too much. But the cat didn’t lose any weight after Eric’s death. True to character, Mom was a ‘softy’. All Duchess had to do was meow twice and her food bowl was replenished. Kay’s wish was that no service be held.
