Obituary of Gwendolyn Gwen Stewart HERBST

August 24, 1920 – October 14, 2011 Gwendolyn “Gwen” Stewart Herbst passed away peacefully in Calgary on Friday, October 14, 2011 at the age of 91 years. Gwen was born in Ottawa, Ontario on August 24, 1920 to parents Boyd Rutherford Morton and Gwendolyn Isabella Morton (nee Stewart). She was a graduate of Queen’s University (BA ’42). She worked as a reporter and columnist for the Ottawa Journal from 1943-1957. Gwen went on to become a high school English teacher in the Ladue School District in St. Louis, Missouri from 1957 to 1961, and later taught English at Manning Jr. High in Jefferson County, Colorado from 1964 to 1976. She also did volunteer work at Lutheran Hospital in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Those who knew her will remember her as a lively conversationalist with a positive attitude and a sincere care for others. She is survived by her three children, Gwendolyn Morton Herbst, Harold Rutherford Herbst, and Andrew Stewart Herbst; as well as by six grandchildren, Michael, Laura, Kendall, Gwendolyn, Heidi, and Amanda; and two great-grandchildren Jacob and Autumn.
