Obituary of Joyce Evelyn WALES

December 24, 1919 – September 9, 2011 Joyce Wales passed away peacefully on Friday, September 9, 2011 at the age of 91 years. Joyce was born in Ardenode, AB the middle child of John and Maggie Dykes. Her family settled in Calgary, where she has spent most of the remainder of her life. She attended Western Canada High School and met her soon to be husband while socializing with the Hillhurst United Church Group. She traveled to Ottawa in December 1942 to marry Ronald Arthur Wales, where they both lived until the war was over, before returning to Calgary. Joyce was an active member of the Southminster United Church, UCW, Friendship Club, Couples Club. After Southminster closed its doors in 2002, she joined St. Matthew’s United Church, continuing her long time friendship with many she met along her life’s journey. She was a member of KIT’S Group, crib club, enjoying monthly lunches and outings with her many friends. Joyce was also an avid card player, enjoyed games of chicken foot dominos, reading, daily crossword puzzles, decode-a-quote puzzles and world traveling with her husband and friends. Joyce is survived by her son Don (Marie) Wales; daughter Dianne Wales; grandchildren, Nicole (Andrew), Christa (Jeff), Nicole (Todd), Teresa (Damian) and numerous great-grandchildren. Joyce will be missed by her sisters and brother-in-law Bessie Sundberg, Audrey Bothwell, Orville Knight as well as her many nieces and newphews. She was predeceased by her husband Ron, parents Maggie and John Dykes; brothers John, Andrew, William Dykes; and sisters Jean Sundberg, Marg Knight and Mary Edwards. Funeral Services will be held at St. Matthew’s United Church (2039 – 26A Street S.W.) on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
