Obituary of Samuel BROADHURST

January 24, 1917 – September 5, 2011 It is with a sad heart that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Father, Samuel (Sam) Broadhurst of Calgary, who passed away on Monday, September 5th, 2011 at the age of 94 years. One of seven children, Sam was born in Manchester, England. On April 8, 1939 he married Edith Lilian Breedon and celebrated sixty-nine years of marriage until Lilian’s passing, two month’s prior to their seventieth anniversary. During the depressed years of 1956 and 1957, Sam and Lilian made the selfless and courageous decision to move to Canada to seek a better life for their children. In 1957 they moved their family to Toronto, ON and later on moved to Kelowna, BC, then to Revelstoke, BC before settling in Calgary, where they have resided for the last thirty plus years. Sam was an accomplished billiard and golf player, and would take any opportunity to show off his proficiency with anyone willing to be humbled. But Sam’s greatest love was music which played a pivotal role in his life, firstly through trumpet playing in a marching band, to ballroom dancing where he and Lilian would spend much of their leisure time, and finally, showing his love for music through singing, giving lasting memories to anyone who heard him carry a melody, which turned out to be an almost daily occurrence at the Bethany Care Centre where he spent the last remaining years of his life. He was always such a performer. Sam is survived by his brother Ken of Australia; his children, Melvin, Neil (Jeannie), Derek (Shirley), Pamela, and Elizabeth (Gerry); six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A Private Memorial Service will be held for family and close friends. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family also wishes to thank the staff at the Bethany Care Centre for their tender care and attention to Sam. In living memory of Samuel Broadhurst, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH Telephone: (403) 276-2296.
