Obituary of Christiane Maria PROKOP

September 16, 1942 – September 4, 2011 Christiane Maria Prokop beloved wife of Manfred of Okotoks, AB, passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at the age of 68 years after a brief but fierce battle with cancer and associated complications. She was surrounded by her husband, her son Tom and wife Jackie, and her sister Irmi and husband Heinz. Christiane was born in Vienna, Austria and completed her education there. In 1965, she joined her husband-to-be Manfred at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana where she immediately found a position as a programmer and instructor of computing science, an experience that meant the world to her. They left the United States in 1969 and came to Edmonton and Sherwood Park where they lived until 2005. Working as a systems analyst and statistics expert in the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Alberta, Chris was respected for her expertise and loved for her compassion, friendliness and helpfulness by graduate students and staff alike. She retired from the University in 2004. Chris and Manfred had two sons, Robert and Thomas, whom she loved with all her heart. After having lived on an acreage near Sherwood Park for more than twenty years, the couple moved to a condominium in Sherwood Park, but soon decided to relocate to the Calgary area to be closer to their son Tom and his lovely wife Jackie and their beautiful children Alexa and Joel. For several years, she volunteered in their school and loved the experience of working with the small children who just adored her. Chris and her twin sister Irmi were very close, and whenever they had the chance to be together, the outside world meant little to them. Chris liked to read and travel, but loved opera the most. When she did Nordic-walking with poles in the last few years she always wore her iPod, walking in rhythm to a broad variety of operas. Besides her husband Manfred, Christiane is survived by her sister Irmi and her son Tom. She was predeceased by her first-born son Robert – an earth-shattering experience for her. A private family service was held in Calgary. An inurnment will be held at Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Sherwood Park. Please forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
