Obituary of CAMERON – Andrea Betty

July 6, 1916 – September 4, 2011 Andrea passed away peacefully at the age of 95 after living a full and wonderful life devoted to family and friends. Her kind and gentle nature touched the hearts of everyone she met. Born in London, England, the daughter of Alma and Christian Johansen, Andrea grew up in England but also spent much of her time with family in Denmark. In the early war years she met a young Canadian airman, Robert H. Niven of Calgary, and was married in London in 1940. Wing Commander Niven, DFC, was killed in action in May 1942. Following the war she and her young son, Robert, boarded a troop ship to Canada and entered the country via Pier 21 in Halifax, one of thousands of arriving war brides. Although planning to return to England after a visit with her new family in Calgary, on board ship she met Dr. J.A. Maxwell Cameron, a Canadian military surgeon returning home after serving through the war in India and Burma. They married in 1948, Max established his medical practice and Calgary became their home. Andrea loved the joy and challenge of building an energetic family but also gave willingly of her time to Medical Wives and the Holy Cross Women’s Auxiliary, supported her husband in his involvement with the Calgary Highlanders and was an active member of Christ Church. Andrea is survived by her loving family, son Bob (Margie) Niven, daughters Cathy (Rick) Francis and Elizabeth Cameron (John Byers), six grandchildren, Christina, Jennifer (Nathan Owen), Cameron, Andrea, Lara (Steve MacEachern) and Tricia, four great- grandchildren and niece Susan Hoddinott. She was predeceased by her husband Max Cameron, brother Derrick Johansen, sister Norma Hoddinott and granddaughter Kirsten Niven. The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the staff of Chinook Care Centre for their loving care of Andrea during her final years.
