Obituary of Alvin Joe McCOOL

January 8, 1938 – August 20, 2011 Joe McCool, beloved husband of Evelyn of Airdrie, passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the age of 73 years. Joe was born in Calgary on January 8, 1938 and was raised east of Crossfield where he attended school. He married the love of his life Evelyn Latimer on May 10, 1957. They first resided in Calgary and Joe took plumbing at SAIT while apprenticing. From there they went to Whitecourt for a winter while Joe became a Journeyman Pipefitter and joined the 488 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. Joe and Evelyn then went to Lamerton, AB where Joe was an Elevator Agent for the United Grain Growers until it closed after two years. They purchased the farm at Bashaw near the George School, where they raised crops, cattle, and hogs for eleven years. Eventually Joe returned to pipefitting and Evelyn held the fort on the farm. This led to a year in Grand Cache while Joe was the project manager during the construction of the power plant. After a brief return to Bashaw the family moved to Airdrie where they operated Joe’s Plumbing and Heating. Always looking for a challenge he became an instructor at SAIT where for five years he helped hundreds of young people start their lives in the trades. The call of farming was strong so Joe and Evelyn started Black Jack Cattle Company. They then bought the ranch at Hanna where they raised world renowned Saler cattle. It was there that Joe and his neighbour Adrian Durand enjoyed great times working together. The Purebred Saler operation was moved to Bottrel in 1981 where Joe and Evelyn began their career as international marketers, selling their Saler genetics to all parts of the globe from the U.S. to Australia to South America. After many years they sold the cows and moved to Cochrane to enjoy their retirement spending their winters in Mesa with all their friends and acquaintances. Besides his loving wife, Joe is survived by his son Eldon McCool and daughter Nora Davis (Darcy); grandchildren Kyle (Kalesha) Keon, Justin (Beverly) McCool, Joeline McCool, Skyler Davis, and Crystal Davis; great-grandchildren Dannica, McKenzie, Kyla, Logan, Madeline, and Evelyn.
