Obituary of Paul Gregory ZONDA

April 16, 1919 – August 19, 2011 Paul Zonda peacefully and quietly passed away at the age of 92 years. Paul was born in Szaszregen, Hungary and was the youngest of four children born to Gergely and Rozalia Zonda. He graduated from the University of Engineering in Sopron, Hungary as a Petroleum Engineer. Paul was instrumental in the development of oil exploration in Hungary in the 1940’s and 50’s. He met and married Baba and had two “lovely” daughters, as he would always say, Annie and Susie. Together the family escaped the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 and immigrated to Canada eventually settling in Calgary. Paul’s career continued in the oil industry as he worked for Western Minerals, Mobil Oil and Sulpetro. His work was very much respected throughout his career. As one of the founding member’s of the Calgary Winter Club, Paul and Baba enjoyed many years of playing tennis and other club sports and activities that continued years later at the Glencoe Club. Together Paul and Baba loved to travel the world especially on cruises and did many driving holidays throughout Canada and Europe. Paul will especially be remembered for his kindness and generosity towards others and continued concern for his relatives and friends in Hungary. Paul will be lovingly remembered by his wife of sixty years Baba and his two daughters and their families; Annie and David Kanaroski and Susie and Don Smith, five grandchildren Jonathan and Tommy Kanaroski, Stephen, Natalie (Ben Shaub) and Michael Smith; and three great grandchildren, Isabella and Ethan Shaub and Rocky Smith. Above all, Paul will be remembered as a true Gentleman by all who knew him. Our deepest gratitude is extended to the wonderful caregivers at Bethany Harvest Hills where Paul spent the last 21/2 years of his life.
