Obituary of Mary Joan LYALL
August 30, 1913 – August 16, 2011
Mary Joan Lyall did “not go gentle into that good night” on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at the age of 97 years.
Born in Edmonton, AB to Frank Gordon Brown and Grace Frances Hambly, with her brother Doug, Mary grew up in the Highlands. She married Millan (Mell) Lyall in 1942. They brought up their family of three children, moving to Calgary in 1959. Shortly after Mell’s retirement, the couple moved to the Kelowna area where they resided until Mell’s passing in 1991. Mary returned to Alberta, living in Water Valley then Crossfield. Mary was a compulsive knitter most of her life, in her later years contributing blankets and scarves to a number of charities.
Mary is survived by daughters Jean (Norman) Sefton and Barbara (Ed) Middleton; son Bruce (Judy Gilbert); nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two nieces. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother; her husband Mell of almost fifty years; brother-in-law Donald; and sister-in-law Dorothy; and her close friend Mearl Potter.
A Memorial Service will be held at Crossfield United Church (1005 Ross Street P.O.
