Obituary of JONES – Stephen Steve John
December 17, 1959 – August 1, 2011
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden accidental passing of Stephen “Steve” John Jones on Monday, August 1, 2011 at the age of 51 years.
Steve was born and raised in Calgary and was the middle child of hardworking immigrant parents. His first job was as a cowpuncher at the Calgary Stockyards. In the early 1980’s he began a career-long employment with the Canadian Pacific Railway and worked in both the mechanical department and the running trades. One of Steve’s greatest accomplishments was qualifying as a locomotive engineer. Steve was proud to be a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLE) and volunteered his time to union duties, most notably the compilation of the yearly holiday list (always a thankless job). He had a strong work ethic and took his duties seriously. He was an avid reader of diverse topics, an interest that no doubt helps explain his skill at crossword puzzles. Anyone who met Steve would remember his sense of humour. He loved to tell a good joke and could deliver a mean punch line. Ten years ago, Steve discovered international travel. His first trip was to Australia to visit family and then he hopped over to Thailand and promptly fell in love with the country. Having travelled to several places in Thailand, Steve discovered Phuket Island, which became his Shangri-La. During his travels in Thailand, Steve made many dear friends, most notably a German couple and their friend from Switzerland. Every year they would rendezvous and holiday together. He longed to return on a more permanent basis. Family and friends were very important to Steve and he would spend as much time with them as possible considering his consuming work schedule. He will be very sorely missed.
Stephen is survived by his mother Anne; brother David (Penny); sister Bronwen Hantos (Jeffrey); daughter Jennifer Crawford (Jeremy); son Robert; nephews, Justin Hantos (Heather), Zachary Hantos and Nigel Hantos; and nieces Melanie and Bernadette. He was predeceased by his father Derrick. Steve was soon to be a grandfather for the first time, as Jennifer and Jeremy are expecting their first child any day.
