Obituary of MAHON – Howard Anthony

September 8, 1940 – July 18, 2011 Howard Anthony Mahon beloved husband of Janine of Calgary, died after a short, fierce battle with cancer on Monday, July 18, 2011 at the age of 70 years. Howard was a thoughtful guy with a big laugh who loved his family, his land, and working with his hands. He made time to learn from everybody he met, and to give them the respect they deserved. Past students and colleagues at Alberta Vocational Centre in Calgary will remember him as a friendly guide through the mysteries of mathematics. Friends and fellow vendors at the Millarville Farmers’ Market knew him for the past twenty years as a skilled wood carver whose pieces produced from felled trees, as well as personal, carefully researched west-coast-style ceremonial masks crafted with curved knives, possessed a finely observed liveliness. His carvings have found homes on at least three continents. His masks watch over the workshops where he was happiest. Howard will be deeply missed by his best friend and partner of thirty years, Janine; brothers Rick (Flo) of Lethbridge and Hugh of Edmonton; children Dan (Brenda) and their daughters Raelene and Niki of Grande Prairie, Toni (James) and their daughters Kya, Keltie and True of Calgary, and Michael of Calgary. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Foothills Country Hospice Society, P.O. Box 274, Okotoks, AB, Telephone: (403) 995-4673, www.countryhospice.org. Thanks to Dr. Ana-Maria Oelschig and all of the staff and volunteers at the Foothills Country Hospice in Okotoks, for their skill, understanding, true caring, and many kindnesses.
