Obituary of CANTWELL – Neil John Toby

October 11, 1919 – June 18, 2011 Neil John “Toby” Cantwell of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at the age of 91 years. Toby was born in Toronto in 1919, and at ten years of age, his parents moved the family to Calgary. Upon completing his education, he headed to Turner Valley and started his career in the oil patch. When duty called, he joined the military and trained with the Calgary Detachment and was later transferred to Lethbridge where they were deployed for World War II. Upon his arrival in Britain, he was transferred to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) where he continued training and made Lieutenant before heading to the front lines. He was honourably discharged September 25, 1945 and returned home to Calgary. For the next five years, he headed to South America and drilled for oil and gas in Trinidad and Venezuela. In 1951 he returned home to Alberta at the height of the oil boom and remained active in the Oil & Gas Industry until 1970. After retiring early from the oil patch, Toby embarked on a new career as a managing director with the Calgary Parking Authority and fully retired in 1984. Among his many professional affiliations, Toby was most proud of his ongoing support of the YMCA and his continued membership of over 75 years. Throughout their retirement Gisela and Toby enjoyed travelling to Palm Springs, CA, throughout Europe, and camping closer to home in Kananaskis and Sundre. Toby was very proud of his sons Robert and Jack also having careers in Oil & Gas Industry, and of Andrew and Joe serving their country and communities as members of the R.C.M.P. Toby is survived by his wife Gisela; sons, Robert (Sandy) and Jack; daughter Gabriel (Rob); Joe (Nancy); grandchildren, Jeanette (Mike), Andrew (Jolene); great-grandchildren, Brett, Sarah, Rachael, and Megan; and his sister Mary Kay. Relatives and friends are invited to a Gathering to celebrate Toby’s Life at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), on Friday, June 24, 2011 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Please forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
