Obituary of ABERG – Richard Sterling

February 18, 1924 – May 30, 2011 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Dick on Monday, May 30, 2011 in Calgary, AB. He passed peacefully surrounded by his immediate family. Beloved husband of Carol of sixty five years, Dick was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on February 18, 1924. After decorated service with the US army during World War II, he completed his engineering degree at the University of Minnesota. Dick had a long and distinguished career with Shell Oil. His postings began in Odessa, Texas and subsequent moves took the family to other points in the US, Canada, the Netherlands and the UK. Upon retiring in Calgary, Dick continued to consult in the oil and gas industry and served on various boards. Of particular interest to Dick was his involvement with Athabasca University as Chair of the Governing Council. His love of the outdoors, fondness of the mountains and involvement in many competitive sports, had a lasting impact on his family as they developed similar interests. Golf in particular became a passion and he was a long time member of nearly fifty years at the Earl Grey Golf Club. Dick was the cherished father of Susan, Ken (Kathy), Steve (Marybeth), Karen and Scott. He was the proud grandfather of Megan, Chris, Tim, Graham, Laura, Erika, Bryce, Madison and Raeleigh, and he also had five great grandchildren. Dick was predeceased by his oldest daughter Susan, and his sister Leone and brother Harry. Dick will be particularly missed by his family and friends as he was a strong and generous man, who was respected by all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
