Condolences
I attended the beautiful service held for Fern yesterday at Christ Church, but wanted to share a few memories of her.
I met Fern when I was in Grade 10 and I became friends with her daughter Gwyn. I always looked up to Fern and thought of her as a role model. I admired her ability to combine being a mother, wife, teacher, artist and great human being. She helped me believe that it was possible to find a way to do all the things you wanted to do with your life. I thought Fern was “cool”, someone modern and accessible. She thought it was important that we listen to “The Beatles” and she would go with us to rock concerts. She was an understanding person I could talk to and she always tried to encourage me if I was feeling discouraged. I liked watching how she tried to bring creativity to everything she did. Together Fern and Ralph welcomed me into their family. Their approach to day to day living was relaxed and informal, and guided by a clear sense of what was important to them. This helped me develop my own ideas about life and how I wanted to live it.
I hadn’t seen Fern during the years of her retirement because I moved to Ontario in 1986 and only rarely had a chance to visit Alberta, but Gwyn kept me up to date with her letters. I admired how Fern used retirement to pursue her love of painting and develop a second career. This is such a great example of healthy aging and something I will try to emulate.
Her special spirit has left us but still enriches us.
So very sorry. Come back to us when you are ready. We miss you.

Dear family of Fern Langemannn,
I attended Marion Carson Elementary for the first seven years of my grade school, where Ms. Langemann, to my recollection, was both the art teacher and assistant principal at the time. I am now 31, and still have vivid memories of two things specifically about her. One being the tight bun she almost always had her long hair up in, and the other a small story.
During kindergarten, I remember the anticipation of not being at the bottom of the totem pole once I would be in grade one, and once this day finally came, I would make the most of it. I stood in line for the water fountains right outside the main office at Marion Carson, then noticed a kindergarten student was ahead of me in line, so my opportunity presented itself and promptly pushed the smaller student aside and went right to the front of the line. No sooner had I turned the tap for a drink then a firm gripped woman ripped me from the fountain and dragged me into her office. I had a great respect for Ms. Langemann, not only because she didn’t call my mother that day, but because she was fair and also very respected by many parents in the school. I attended her retirement party about a decade ago at least, and I remember the turnout was significant!! My thoughts are with you and your family.
Pls Forgive my grammar as this was typed on my phone, my how far we’ve come!!!
Kind Regards,
Craig Heynen

We were saddened to learn of Fern’s passing and wish to extend our sincere condolences to her family. We would like to share publicly what we had communicated to Fern personally. “Thank you Fern for the encouragement and support you showed to our daughter Jenn when you were her art teacher at Marion Carson Elementary.” In one of Jenn’s Grade 5 progress reports Fern had written, “She is a very competent painter and has a gorgeous sense of design and pattern. Please encourage this wonderful talent.” We credit Fern with Jenn attending ACAD many years later and now enjoying a fulfilling career in art.
To friends and family,
I became Assistant Principal at Marion Carson after Fern’s retirement, and I vividly recall her kindness and generous spirit, as well her great love of the school’s children. Her artistic legacy and creative talents enriched the lives of others throughout her life. With sincere condolences,
Shirley Gaura – Principal, CBE
