Obituary of SARGIOUS – Michel Amin, BSc, MEng, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Schulich Faculty of Engineering

February 26, 1930 – May 8, 2011 Dr. Michel Amin Sargious passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a courageous two and a half year battle with cancer. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of forty-three years Samia; his two children, Peter (Bonnie Rush) and Monica (Matthew Beswick); as well as his four grandchildren who have been the joy of his life for the past five years, Gabrielle, James, Luke and Paula. He is also survived by his sisters, Camila and Faiza; his close friend and nephew Dr. Edward Said; as well as extended family in Egypt, Canada and the US. He was predeceased by his sister Athena and his brother Aziz. Michel was born in Cairo, Egypt to Amin and Bodour. He received his BSc and MEng from the University of Cairo and his PhD from the University of Stuttgart. He worked in Egypt and Kuwait prior to immigrating to Canada. He joined the University of Calgary in 1968, becoming a full professor in the Department of Civil Engineering in 1976, and retiring in 1990. His achievements during that time included: Acting Associate Dean Academic (1984-85), Acting Head of the Department (1986-88), joining CIDA to help establish a Faculty of Engineering in Nepal (1991-97), establishing a meritorious scholarship for civil engineering students, and publishing over 80 technical papers and a book on Pavements. His proudest career moment was receiving the Distinguished Lifetime Leadership Award from the Schulich School of Engineering in 2010. Above all, Michel will be remembered for his love of family, zest for life, and strength of character. Special thanks go to Dr. Scot Dowden, to all of the other healthcare professionals who provided outstanding care through his illness, and to the entire team at Agape Hospice for their compassion during his final days.
