Obituary of JASINSKI – Karl Anthoni

October 25, 1930 – May 6, 2011 Karl Jasinski passed away peacefully in his sleep at age 80 during the night of May 5-6, after a brief, intense, six-month battle with cancer. The family thanks the nurses, doctors and staff of Foothills Hospital and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre (with special mention to Dr. W. Temple) for their expert, compassionate care during his illness. Born in the small northern farming community of Bellis, AB, Karl was gifted from childhood with incredible mechanical dexterity, an independent will, and a lion-sized heart, attributes that remained resolute throughout his long, rich life. Karl moved to Stettler as a young man, where he met May Jasinski (nee Keibel), the love of his life. They wed in 1955, and have been the proud progenitors of four children, ten grandchildren, and one great-grandchild (so far). After early years in Stettler and Edmonton, Karl and May settled in south Calgary, where they have lived happily for the last forty years. Karl’s working life of more than fifty-five years was devoted to the oil patch. Those with a mental image of John Wayne standing on a drilling rig platform, dispensing gruff counsel and leading his team to success will not be far off in their conception. His career included extensive service with Gulf Oil and Union Oil, before later co-founding his own companies, including Kan Drill, and later Magma Tool & Supply Co. Karl also worked for many years as an independent consultant in directional and air drilling supervision. A devoted husband, father, uncle, cousin, grandfather and great-grandfather, much of Karl’s time away from the oil industry was spent indulging his simultaneous loves of family, hard work, and craftsmanship in a perpetual flurry of projects on behalf of others. No project was too big, too small or too soon, and included all manner of woodworking, home improvements, car repairs, landscaping, plumbing, electrical, and electronic activities to name just a few. All were done expertly, inevitably with a solid dose of plain spoken advice thrown in along the way for good measure. On the rare occasions that Karl allowed relaxation to be foisted upon him, Maui was the destination of choice, with central Alberta’s Carefree Resort (summer) and Victoria B.C. (winter) also being acceptable alternatives.
