Obituary of GOVIND – Daya Wati
October 4, 1949 – April 10, 2011
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Daya Wati Govind, beloved wife of Bishun Dayal Govind, at the age of 61 years after a courageous battle with cancer.
Daya was born in Raiwaqa, Suva, Fiji Islands. She grew up with her large family, which included many cousins, with whom she remained close throughout her life. Daya migrated to Canada with her family in 1974. She was the foundation of her family, and worked hard to build a loving home for them. Daya also played a vital role in the upbringing of her grandchildren, who brought her a tremendous amount of joy. They will always remember their grandma’s loving, kind, and generous ways. Daya was well-respected in the Fijian community; she enjoyed volunteering with the Suva Soccer Association, and was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever required. Her final place of employment was at the Calgary International Airport, where Daya became a familiar figure to family and friends. Daya will be fondly remembered for her ever-present smile, which would light up any room she walked into.
Besides her devoted husband of 41 years, Daya will be lovingly remembered by her children; Ranjana Sharma (Shailend), Janice Chandra (Ritesh), and Sanjay Govind (Christy); grandchildren: Ashneil, Rajneil, Rohan, Rupi, Joshua, and Ishaan; sister-in-law Sarojni Kumar; brother Virendra Kumar (Mary); sisters Maya Sahay (Ram) and Sushila Prasad (Chandrika); numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She will also be remembered by other extended family members and so many friends whose lives she brightened.
Daya was predeceased by her father Behari Lal, her mother Phul Kaur Lal, and her eldest brother Bijay Kumar.
