Obituary of VATANEN– Erik Johannes

May 9, 1971 – March 30, 2011 Erik Vatanen passed away at Rosedale Hospice on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, after a courageous battle with brain cancer, at the age of 39 years. Kathy, his wife of sixteen years, and his precious daughter Tessa were at his side. Erik was an avid cyclist who, over many years, pushed himself to the limit in ultra-endurance events and in a variety of mountain and road bike races. Even after his diagnosis Erik rode in the 2010 Ride to Conquer Cancer and was in the top five out of almost nineteen hundred riders to finish the epic ride. He was a hero and an inspiration to us all. Erik’s quiet humour and amazing smile will be missed by all who knew him. His kindness, determination and easy-going nature will live on in his beautiful four year old daughter. His love for his wife and daughter was undeniable.
