Obituary of WHITEWAY – Isabel Ruby
December 11, 1947 – March 4, 2011
It is with deep sadness that we announce that Isabel passed away peacefully in Calgary, on Friday, March 4, 2011, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Isabel is survived by her fun loving husband George, who she fondly called “Butch” and he called her “Babe”; her beautiful daughter Tammi, whom she adored; her “go to” son-in-law, Paul O’Donoghue; and her treasured granddaughters, Kyleigh and Erin, who brought her so much joy. Isabel grew up in St. John’s, NL as the youngest of five children, hence the nickname “Babe”. She will be dearly missed by her brothers, Charlie (Shirley) Smallwood, Gus (Gloria) Smallwood, Alex (Violet) Smallwood and her brother-in-law Wayne (Linda) Whiteway, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Isabel was predeceased by her sister Maxine Clarke.
Isabel was a remarkable wife, mother, grandmother and friend; she enriched the lives of her family and friends through her strength of character, her wisdom, her grace, her dignity and especially during her battle with cancer, she only worried about those around her. Isabel’s strength gave her family the courage to persevere. While Isabel’s time with us was far too short, she leaves us with true inspiration. Isabel earned the respect and affection of her colleagues at the Newfoundland Teachers Association, where she had a distinguished career.
She had many names from Babe, Bella, to Queen,
All of them spoken with love and esteem,
But all of the names she has ever been called,
To call her wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend
is the greatest of all.
The Whiteway’s extend a sincere thanks to all the wonderful people who generously contributed to Isabel’s care during her illness, and especially the O’Donoghue family for their love and tremendous support.
A private prayer service will be held in Calgary, followed by a memorial in Isabel’s home town, St. John’s, NL. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
