Obituary of Richard Joseph McCAFFREY
August 31, 1922 – February 19, 2011
Dick McCaffrey, beloved husband of Madge McCaffrey of Calgary, passed away in the peaceful surroundings of Wentworth Manor on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the age of 88 years.
He was born in 1922 in Eston, Saskatchewan, grew up during the Great Depression, and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He studied geology at the University of Alberta and after graduating in 1948, embarked on a career in geophysics that spanned thirty-nine years. Dick worked for seismic contractors in the early years and later for energy companies. In the 1960s with Tenneco Oil, he led the family on a five-year adventure with stops in Texas, Colorado and Louisiana. Upon returning to Alberta, Dick finished his career with the Banff Oil – Aquitaine – Canterra group of companies. He proudly served as President of the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists for the 1977 term.
Dick was a loving husband and an inspirational father. Besides his wife of sixty-one years, Madge, he is also survived by daughters, Veronica McCaffrey, Diane (Joe) Pollock, and Lorie (Jeff) Joyce; sons, Brian (Bless) McCaffrey and John (Roxanne) McCaffrey; and fourteen grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church (2424 – 24th Avenue N.W.) on Friday, February 25, 2011 at 12:00 noon. The family would like to thank the devoted staff of caregivers through Dick’s years at Wentworth Manor. If relatives and friends so desire, memorial donations in Dick’s honour may be made directly to the Canadian Diabetes Association, #204, 2323 – 32nd Avenue N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 6Z3.
