Obituary of HOGGARD – Shirley Smith

December 28, 1928 – January 15, 2011 Shirley, a beautiful, generous and gentle soul passed away peacefully on January 15, 2011 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She is survived by her husband John; children Graham (Rhonda) Hoggard, Carol (Rob) Craig and grandchildren Hailey, Emily, Lucas, Logan and Katelyn. Shirley was born in Young, SK. She grew up in Weldon, SK and juggled school and helping out in the family cafe, where she perfected her famous pies. She left for the adventure of the big city, arriving and staying in Calgary where she met and married John. John and Shirley were married for forty-five years and enjoyed raising their family together. Shirley loved to garden, play bridge, visit with neighbours, and all activities that involved her family, like hiking and camping. She made lasting friendships in all walks of life, and she will be remembered most for her gracious skill of making all around her feel welcomed and important. Shirley was as devoted as a wife could be to John, and as Shirley’s health declined John in turn devoted each and every day to feeding and caring for his wife. Shirley is also survived by her brother Roly (Mae) Oakenfold and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Shirley was predeceased by her sister Adele (George) Leonard and her sister Leora Oakenfold, her mother Vivian (Smith) Oakenfold, her stepmother Alice (Pederson) Oakenfold and her father Alfred “Mick” Oakenfold. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Friday, January 28, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
