Obituary of LAW – Patricia
January 2, 1923 – December 21, 2010
Pat passed away peacefully at her home at Staywell Manor in Calgary.
Mary Patricia Law was born in Rochdale, England, attended Manchester Grammar School, and won a scholarship to the University of Edinburgh where she completed an MA in Philosophy and Economics. During WWII, Pat served with the British Army in the Auxiliary Territorial Service and Intelligence Corps.
She and her future husband Jim (Hamish) developed a friendship at a forestry camp for university students, at Skipness on the Mull of Kintyre in 1940. They met again after the war, were married in Rochdale in 1949 and emigrated to Canada.
Pat dedicated herself to her children, first in Calgary, then overseas as she and Jim moved en famille to France in 1956 and then to Libya in 1958, returning to Calgary in 1962. She worked as a tax preparer, and volunteered in that role at the Kerby Centre while she still had children at home. Pat then returned to school, earned a Diploma in Library Science from SAIT (1981), and subsequently worked for several years at Home Oil in Calgary. She retired in 1987 allowing her and Jim to travel more; her favourite trips were hiking in the Rockies and exploring new country-sides. In later years she expressed herself through gardening, quilting, embroidery, painting, music and calligraphy.
Pat was predeceased by her loving husband Jim and by her dear sister Peggy (Gourock, Scotland). She is lovingly remembered by her children: Graham (Rosemary Nation) and their sons Colin and Martin; Fiona (Al Chapman) and their sons Tyler and Stephen; Matt (Danelle Hames) and their sons Iain and Liam; and Jennifer (Bill Lancashire) and their children Joanna and Peter (of Port Macquarie, Australia). Pat instilled in her children a broad view of the world, a love of music, a desire to pursue their dreams and the ambition to do things well.
The family wishes to express its appreciation to the staff at the Manor Village at Garrison Woods and for the heartfelt care and comfort provided by the staff of Staywell Manor.
An informal reception to remember Pat will be held at The Glencoe Club (636 – 29 Avenue S.W.) on Sunday, January 2, 2011. Please join the family anytime between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations, if desired, can be made in Pat’s name to Horizons of Friendship (www.horizons.ca). Condolences can be sent to 310 – 15th Avenue S.W., T2R 0P8, or forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
