Obituary of PATTERSON – William Ernest

September 21, 1946 – December 11, 2010 It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved husband and father. Bill’s family was his greatest joy. He was a loving and devoted husband and father. He will be forever missed by his wife of 39 years, Alana; his children Steven Patterson, Robyn Gripton (Stuart) and Megan Patterson (fiancé – David Hjulfors). Bill is also survived by his sister Sharon Simpson, brother Dean Patterson (Lyndsay), and his brother’s in-law Alec and Cam McDonald (Coral) and sister in-law Elaine McDonald. Born in Edmonton to Doris and James Patterson, the family moved to Calgary when Bill was a young boy. Bill attended Crescent Heights High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Calgary in 1969. In 1973, Bill received a Charter Accountant designation beginning his career in public accounting. He spent the majority of his career in public accounting as a Tax Partner with a national and international firm. Leaving public practice in 1999 to pursue new challenges, Bill took the position of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with a junior oil and gas company. With the sale of this company in 2004, Bill divided his time between CFO responsibilities for junior oil and gas companies and his own private practice. In addition, he served on several private and public company boards; where he held positions as Director or Trustee. Bill loved his work and throughout his career developed many life long friendships with colleagues and clients. Active in his profession, Bill served as President of the Calgary CA Association, Treasurer/Board Member of the Canadian Petroleum Tax Society and on institute committees. Bill was a great supporter of the arts, giving his time to the community as a former President of Theatre Calgary, Board Member/Treasurer of the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts, and until recently as President of Quest Theatre. Bill cherished his time spent with his children; coaching soccer, skiing and playing golf. A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 – 8 Street S.W.) on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
