Obituary of STAKENAS – Peter
September 26, 1914 – November 30, 2010
Peter beloved husband of Helen of Calgary, passed away on November 30, 2010 at the age of 96 years.
Peter Stakenas was born in 1914 to Lithuanian parents Peter and Eva in Chicago, USA. The family operated farms in the James River, Didsbury and Carstairs areas. In 1945 Peter and Helen moved to Calgary where eventually Peter began a long career with Imperial Oil while keeping a hand in the farm west of Carstairs for many years. Peter and Helen were active members of several square dance clubs, the Go Getters, the Second Sixties Hiking Club, Gliders Dance Club, Confederation Park Seniors, and the Canadian Legion #264. He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. In retirement Peter and Helen travelled extensively to Europe, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, the south western USA and western Canada – a source of great enjoyment for both of them.
He leaves Helen his loving wife of seventy years, daughters Elaine (Doug Bouey), Marjorie (David Sweeney) and son Leonard (Gayle Stakenas); grandchildren Jane, David, Evan and Eily; brother in law John Grey of Lethbridge, sister in law Amelia Coupland of Surrey BC, and many nephews, nieces and cousins in Canada and the USA.
He was predeceased by his sister Anna Choponis of Cadillac, Michigan (September 21, 2010).
Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church (711 – 37th Street N.W.) on Friday, December 3, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church (711 – 37th Street N.W.) on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
