November 29, 1915 – November 22, 2010 Annela (Nellie) Verna Garthwaite of Calgary passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Brentwood Lodge on Monday, November 22, 2010 at the age of 94 years. Nellie was adored by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She had an incredible work ethic and an extraordinarily compassionate heart. She spent the majority of her life caring for other people in some form or another. As one of the elder siblings, she helped to raise her younger brothers and sisters. She was a cook in the Canadian military in World War II where she prepared meals for hundreds of soldiers. Along with her close friend, Nonie Kinghorn, Nellie co-owned a restaurant called “The Horseshoe” in Black Diamond, where they served many hungry customers with a smile and a kind word. She was very devoted to the Catholic Church as a member of the CWL and the Third Order. Nellie was not blessed with children of her own, but was always available to be a caregiver to her numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and her cherished friends. Nellie leaves behind a brother, Isador Wyshynski of Elstow, Saskatchewan, and many nieces and nephews and beloved friends. Nellie was predeceased by her loving husband Thomas Garthwaite; three brothers, Victor, Bernard and Napoleon Wyshynski; and two sisters, Genevieve Hetherington and Louise Maynard.
