Obituary of DAVIES – Jean Elizabeth
January 3, 1925 – November 10, 2010
Jean Elizabeth Davies (nee Stephenson), of Calgary, beloved wife of the late Stanley James Davies Jr., passed away after a long illness at Bethany Harvest Hills Nursing Home on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the age of 85 years.
Jean was born on January 3, 1925, in Rosetown, SK, and was raised in Stranraer, SK. In 1947 Jean moved to Vancouver, BC and lived there until her move to Pioneer Mine. In 1965 she moved to Turner Valley, AB and then in 1980 to Calgary, where she remained for the rest of her life.
Jean was a teacher with the Maple Ridge School Division in British Columbia and a reading specialist with the Foothills School Division in Alberta until she retired in 1989. She volunteered with the Canadian National Society for the Blind and the Alzheimer’s Society. An avid reader, she couldn’t resist books of any description and over her lifetime amassed a vast library of volumes on a wide range of subjects. Jean kept the complete works of Robbie Burns in a place of honour on her mantle. She loved doing crossword puzzles and was a gifted seamstress. She was passionate about her craft making hobby and for many years attended garage sales in search of items to add to the growing collection in her basement. .
Jean is survived by her three children and seven grandchildren: Rodney Charles Chapman and his wife Jennifer MacLeod of Moncton, NB, and their two sons, Hugh Charles MacLeod Chapman and Weston Robert Chapman MacLeod; Brian Edward Chapman of Calgary, AB and his two sons, Michael Chapman and Matthew Chapman; and Cynthia Edith Chapman of Chicago, Illinois and her three daughters, Lauren Chapman, Claire Chapman, and Charlotte Chapman. She is also survived by her two brothers, John Gordon Stephenson and William Bannerman Stephenson, both of SK. Jean was predeceased by her first husband, Charles Edward Chapman (1959); by her second husband, Stanley James Davies Jr. (1997); by her parents Edith M. Stephenson and John B. Stephenson; and by her sister Doris Hamilton of Vancouver, BC.
