Obituary of Isabel Evelyn Hardwick Calow

28 June 1918 – 4 November 2010 It is with great sadness that we wish to announce the death of Evelyn Hardwick Calow. Evelyn was the second daughter of southern Alberta pioneer ranchers Douglas and Isabelle Hardwick. She was born in Gleichen and attended school in Amada and at St. Hilda’s in Calgary. After graduating as a Registered Nurse from the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing in 1941, Evelyn saw wartime service as an RCAF nurse in Canada and overseas until 1946. She later joined Dr. Russ McManus in his post-war civilian medical practice in Calgary, and then finished her career as an industrial nurse at the Calgary COMINCO plant, retiring in 1972. In 1980, Evelyn married her long-time close friend George Calow. They enjoyed 27 very happy years together in Calgary, Priddis, and Sidney B.C. until George’s death in 2007. Evelyn’s life was one of loving kindness, generosity and selflessness. She readily felt the needs of others and did everything in her power to fill those needs, usually with the most precious gift of all, her time. Evelyn faced her terminal illness with the utmost of courage and dignity. We wish to thank Dr. Heng, Rev. Helen Belcher, the caregivers of We Care, especially Maria, the compassionate night caregiver, and Sandy, the morning ray of sunshine, and palliative care RN angels Cynthia, Irene and Helen. You have all made Evelyn’s final journey more comfortable and peaceful. Evelyn is survived by her sister Helena Douglass of Edmonton. Evelyn will be greatly missed by her sister; George’s family including stepchildren George Calow (Luba), Beverley Nate and Bob Calow, grandchildren Jeremy (Erin), Kimberley, Devin (Jen), Jason (Sarah), and Dana (Christian); the Millie and Mears families; many cousins; and countless close friends in Canada and beyond. A Celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, 903 – 75 Avenue S.W. on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. A private family service for interment of ashes will be held at Union Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Evelyn’s memory may do so to STARS or to the Southern Alberta Pioneers Memorial Building Fund, 3625 – 4th Street S.W., Calgary AB T2S 1Y3.
