Duane Gillis

Obituary of Duane Kenneth Gillis

Duane Gillis of Calgary, Alberta passed away on Tuesday October 23, 2007 at the age of 44 years. Duane will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humour, his kindness and his generosity. Duane loved Springsteen, Pink Floyd and would sing “eency, weency spider” in a Bob Dylan voice to his beloved daughter when she was a baby. He worked on the oil rigs, before deciding to go to law school where he won a silver medal in his graduating class, and privatized the electric system in Hungary, while working with Stikeman Elliot, where he was a partner for fifteen years. He loved to travel, fish, rock climb, ice climb, hike and watch WWF wrestling. Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear. Left to cherish Duane’s memory are his daughter; his mother Carol Gillis and his father Ken Gillis; his sister Terri Gillis; his brother Sam Gillis; his grandfather Ken Retallack; his aunts and uncles, Doreen Feys, Ryan Gillis, Bobbie and Dale Maconochie, Wendy and Phil Schneider. He is also survived by his cousins, Kathy (Neil Haubrich) Feys, Grant Maconochie, Robyn Maconochie, Shannon (Steve) Benson and baby Regan, Kym (Dean) Lathwell, Eric (Carla) Schneider, Claire, Averi and Katie. It was Duane’s wish to not have a funeral service. In lieu of flowers, Duane would have wished a donation to the charity of your choice. In living memory of Duane Gillis, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.
