Obituary of ENGEN – Peggy Winifred

November 2, 1922 – October 21, 2010 Peggy Winifred Engen passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 1:20 a.m. at the Agapé Hospice after a courageous battle with various abdominal cancers. She was surrounded by her family, daughter and son-in-law Dana and Gary Borkristl, son and daughter-in-law Doug and Birgit Engen, and son Jeff Engen. Peggy was predeceased by her husband Gordon in 1987. Peggy was a born and bred Calgarian for her almost 88 years. Her strong will and tenacious personality were with her until her last breath. Those traits were evident by the fact that she just retired from her bookkeeping job with the wonderful people at Tuxedo Cycle and Sports last year (because she couldn’t drive any more). Peggy and Gordon got involved with the Tuxedo Community Association back in the early 1950’s, and Peggy continued her involvement after Gordon’s death right up until last year. She received many awards for her longstanding community volunteering including, The Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award, The Prime Minister Chretien 50 Year Award, The United Nations International Year of the Volunteer Award (presented by her friend and neighbour Ralph Klein), The Alberta Centennial Medal (presented by Lt. Governor Norman Kwong and Ralph Klein), The Government of Alberta 50 Year Community Service Award (presented by MLA Richard Magnus), and The City of Calgary 55 Year Community Service Award (presented by Ald. Bob Hawkesworth). She would not hesitate to phone any of these people and rag on them to get something done in the community. Peggy also was selected to be one of the Caring Calgarians to have her handprint embedded in the cement columns of the Welcome to Calgary signs at the entrances to the city. Peggy was fortunate to meet some real life Angels over the last three and a half months at the Agape Hospice, and although she tried to tarnish some of their halos, they stood fast and gave her loving care. We thank the staff for their care and patience. Peggy made it clear to us that there is to be no funeral, so to avoid any wrath she would inflict on us, we will respect her wishes.
