Obituary of BRADLEY – Elisabeth Mona

December 11, 1915 – September 22, 2010 Mona Bradley has passed away after living a healthy, happy life. She was born and raised in Edmonton along with her three brothers – Norman, Barney and Frank. Mona had the good fortune to attend the University of Alberta where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1938. The other thing Mona earned at U of A was the undying love of a young medical student from Saskatchewan. Leonard Orville (Brad) Bradley became her husband in 1941; they were destined to spend sixty-three years together until Brad’s death in 2005. She and Brad shared an interesting life and many adventures together. They travelled widely, in a time when that was not so common, including to China in 1982. Brad’s successful career as a hospital administrator took them to Calgary, Winnipeg, Minneapolis, Toronto and Vancouver. In each place they put down roots and made lifelong friends. They were wonderful entertainers, great bridge players and enjoyed their nightly ritual of reviewing the day’s events over a pre-dinner martini. Mona and Brad had four children, Leslie, Bill, Heather, and Tom. Mona raised a very tight knit family despite the kids not being close in age, and often far flung geographically. One of the secrets of her success was the family cottage at Betula Lake in Manitoba purchased in 1958. Mona spent fifty summers at the lake where the family would assemble and reconnect in the easy way of summer. These may have been Mona’s happiest times. She would read endlessly, practice her lifelong habit of daily swims and walks, pick blueberries, bake pies, and play cribbage with her kids and later, grandkids (Tracy, Nikki and Stephen) and great-grandkids (Hannah, Emma and Ike). Mona was a formidable woman. She was always very striking, intelligent, well-read, gracious and warm, with a ready smile, and easy laugh. Mona was predeceased by Brad and her beloved son Bill (2009). She will be lovingly remembered and missed by the rest of her family including Leslie, Heather, Tom and their families, Bill’s wife Donna and their family, and the extended Bounds and Bradley clans. The Staff at the Edgemont Retirement Residence are commended for their warm attentive care. Mona’s life is being celebrated by family and friends with a memorial service on Monday, September 27, 2010 at noon at Scarboro United Church (134 Scarboro Avenue S.W.).
