Obituary of BARKER – Elizabeth Matheson
1921 – 2010
Elizabeth Matheson Barker passed away peacefully, in Calgary, during the early hours of Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at the age of 89.
Born to Samuel L. and Margaret E. deCarteret in Quebec City, Elizabeth was raised in Westmount and the Eastern Townships of Quebec. She met N. Stewart Barker while they both attended Queen’s University in Kingston, and were soon married in Montreal in July 1943.
Elizabeth and Stewart started their life together in Victoria BC, and moved to Calgary in 1945, where they established themselves and started a family. Mom enjoyed the majority of her life supporting the endeavours and activities of Stewart and their children and grandchildren. She was always proud of their accomplishments.
Over the years, Mom was active in the Calgary Kinette and Samaritan Clubs, and enjoyed many summers spent with family and friends at Bragg Creek. Her roast beef was legendary. While Mom and Dad travelled to many fun places on business and pleasure trips, she always had a soft spot in her heart for Quebec, and jumped at any opportunity to return there for a visit.
Although her health deteriorated quickly over the last several weeks, it seems symbolic that Mom / Gramma departed this life with the last exuberant day of summer.
Elizabeth will be lovingly remembered by her daughter and son-in-law Meg and Gord Bures (Calgary), sons and daughters-in-law Jay D. and Penny Barker (Cochrane, AB), and Larry and Marion Barker (Burlington, ON); grandchildren Erica and Reese Barker (Cochrane), Scott and Janice Barker (Breslau, ON), Greg Barker (Toronto, ON), and great granddaughter Fiona Barker (Breslau). Elizabeth was predeceased by Stewart in 2005, and her sister Helen J. Guile in 1994. Out of respect for Mom’s wishes, there will be no memorial service. The family would like to thank the staff at Bow View Manor for the wonderful care and support shown to Mom. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
In living memory of Elizabeth Barker, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.
