Obituary of AITKEN – Ethel Jean

February 14, 1911 – August 18, 2010 Our dear Mom, Gram and Auntie Eff passed away peacefully in her 100th year, leaving a legacy of love. It was no coincidence that she was born on Valentines Day ! Ethel is survived by her children: Barbara Aitken (Bob Vickers), Gary (Judy), and Susan Aitken, as well as seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and special nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her cherished granddaughter Kristin Bala Kosak in 2002. Ethel was born and raised in Edmonton where she became a teacher. Her first teaching job was in a one-room school in Westaskiwin and her love of children continued to define her and influence all those around her. When we think of Mom we will remember her quick pace with a purpose to every step, her sense of humour and warm smile, her love of bridge, books and baking. After moving to Calgary from Parksville when her beloved husband, Fred, passed away in 1984 she appreciated the fellowship of Scarboro United Church and being close to her children and grandchildren. Mom was the “hostess with the mostess,” welcoming friends and family with wonderful home cooked meals, especially Sunday roast beef dinners, always on the good china. From her we learned to cherish the love of family and friends. The family wishes to thank Dr. Peter Thornton, caregiver Evelyn Sanico and the staff at Carewest Royal Park where she received loving care for many years. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the Kristin Bala Kosak Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o U of C Development Office, 2500 University Drive N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1N4 or to Operation Eyesight 4 Parkdale Crescent N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 3T8. In living memory of Ethel Jean Aitken, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.
