Obituary of FISHER – Royden Otto

May 3, 1931 – August 16, 2010 Beloved and admired father, grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away on August 16, 2010 at 79 years of age. Roy was born May 3, 1931 in Didsbury, Alberta where he spent his childhood. He graduated from the University of Alberta 1953 with a B.Sc. Eng (Petroleum) and acquired his professional engineer status soon after. He enjoyed a wonderful and successful career working in the oil patch in Calgary. There he developed many long and lasting friendships, as well as maintaining many childhood friends. Roy had many activities that he loved and introduced his family to; running, downhill skiing, boating, waterskiing, golfing and fishing. His life-long love of travelling overseas with Jean to hike, backpack and scuba-dive were some of his most memorable times. He enjoyed his many days hunting, fishing, curling and helicopter skiing with his buddies – no sitting on the beach for Roy! He began running in the late 1960’s at the downtown YMCA where he built and nourished many relationships over his noon hour runs. He only recently had to slow down to a walking pace. Roy began his career at Pacific Petroleum in 1954, moved on to Alcon, Bow Valley Industries and then retired with Ocelot Industries at the age of 55. One of his honourable career accomplishments was receiving the L.C. Charlesworth Award for his substantial contribution to APEGGA. Somehow in all this, he found time to raise his family, train and compete in marathons, ski patrol at Sunshine Village and complete ocean navigation courses so the family could experience an ocean boating holiday. His charitable work included a long membership with the Al Azhar Shriners Motorcycle Corps. His passion and enthusiasm was obvious for every activity and interest in his life. His passing has left a very large hole in many peoples’ lives, he will be greatly missed. Roy is survived by his daughter Linda Fisher (Arnold McKee), daughter Jill (Brad) Jackson, son Robert (Tracey) Fisher, grandchildren Lindsay, Mitchell, Nicole, Sean and Ben. He is also survived by special nephew Doug Colwell (SheilaTorgunrud) and their children Keri and Candace, Lorna (Harold) Mueller and their children Elaine, Maxine, Darcy, Donald, Valerie and their families; brother-in-law Bill (Shirley) Rennie and their children Blake and Marlee and many other cousins. He was predeceased by his loving wife Jean Fisher, sister Marguerite and close cousin Harold Mueller. A private service is being held for family. An open visitation for Roy’s Urn will be held from 5:30-8:30 pm on Monday August 23, 2010 at McInnis and Holloway Park Memorial Chapel at 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (www.cysticfibrosis.ca). May the road rise up to meet you May the wind be always at your back May the sun shine warm upon your face The rains fall soft upon your fields And until we meet again May God hold you in the palm of His hand. In living memory of Royden Fisher, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.
