Obituary of McGinnis – Andrea

December 5, 1923 – August 3, 2010 On Tuesday, August 3rd, Andrea McGinnis (nee Dean) passed away at the Foothills Hospital. Loving mother to daughter Lori Williams and sons Martin, Bruce and Brian, devoted grandmother to Amber, Jessica, Gordon, Tyler, Coral, Karlyle, Willie and Devena, beloved “Auntie June” to numerous nieces and nephews and a valued friend to many more. Born on December 5th, 1923, Andrea lived the first half of her life in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. She attended Business College in Sherbrooke and later worked for Canadian Johns Manville in Asbestos. There she met and married Malcolm McGinnis and joined him overseas for a year in Japan as part of the U.S. Occupational Forces after the end of the Second World War. Upon her return to Canada, she and Malcolm started a family in rural Quebec. In 1970, Andrea and the family moved to Calgary. She later began working at the Sarcee Auxiliary Hospital where she enjoyed 12 years of sharing her warm humour and generous nature with colleagues and patients alike. Andrea engaged in many pursuits, but painting landscapes and knitting were her favourite pastimes. She made certain all her descendants had cozy afghans to snuggle up in on cold prairie nights. She also knitted mittens, hats and scarves for the Mustard Seed Society and volunteered her time at the Kerby Seniors Centre. For many of her later years, Andrea was burdened with a deteriorating heart condition, yet she rarely complained. She will truly be missed by all who were touched by her kind and gentle spirit. Memorial Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Monday August 9, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca.
