Obituary of BUTLER – Alfred James

February 8, 1918 – July 25, 2010 It is with profound sadness that we mourn the sudden passing of Alfred James (Jim) Butler on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at the age of 92. He will truly be missed by his wife, Sybil, of 64 years and lovingly remembered by his children Darlene Montgomery (Nee Butler), Russell (Bonnie), Bradley (Elaine), and Janice (Terry) as well as his seven grandchildren; Chealsey (Ryan) and great-grandchild Nathan, Christine (Mike), Amanda, Samantha, Michelle, Justin and Nicole. Jim is survived by one brother and five sisters as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Winifred May Butler (nee Cook) and his father Albert George Butler and a brother William (Billy) Butler. Jim was a home-grown Alberta Boy, born in Calgary and raised in Bottrell on the family homestead where his roots began and remained a true part of him throughout his life. He returned almost every year to attend the Dogpound Rodeo as well as many family gatherings. Jim served five years in the Canadian Armed Forces whiled being posted in several Canadian cities, Jamaica, and Europe. He was most proud to have been part of the liberation of Holland in 1945. When the war ended, he returned home to marry the love of his life. During his long life Jim worked as a ranch hand, in the CP Ogden rail yards, owned and operated an insurance company as well as a real estate company, finally ending his career as a realtor at the age of 75. Throughout his life he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, curling (until age 89), gardening and a good meal but his greatest passion was reserved for his family. He volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels for 25 years and in his retirement enjoyed numerous RV trips with friends. Jim was a loving soul with a giving heart. It was as easy for him to offer up a hand as it was a smile or a joke with his quick wit. He was a true gentleman of great integrity and honour who enjoyed life to the fullest. Jim will never be forgotten and will always be missed and remembered fondly by all who knew him. The family would like to send a special thanks to those who cared for Dad at the Colonel Belcher this past year. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens.
