Obituary of GILBERT – Aubrey Leonard Arthur

March 8, 1926 – July 23, 2010 Aubrey Leonard Arthur (Sam) Gilbert of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 23, 2010 with his wife Rose by his side at the age of 84 years. Sam was born on March 8, 1926 in Hammersmith, England. Sam served overseas in the British Army in France, Holland, Belgium, and crossing the Rhine into Hamburg. Sam and Rose were married on February 9, 1946. The Gilberts, with their three children immigrated to Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1965 where Sam was employed in the upholstery business, ending his career as the proud owner of three upholstery stores in the High River area. Sam retired early and he and Rose spent a few happy years touring through the United States, and retiring in Okanagan Falls, BC for a while and finally settling in Hines Creek, AB where they remained until 2005 when they moved to Strathmore, AB. Sam was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Strathmore where he enjoyed all his new found Strathmore friends while playing crib and darts. He will be sadly missed and forever remembered for his giving nature, his always present shirt and tie, and ever ready smile and warm heart. We love you Sam, Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa. You are forever in our hearts. Besides his loving wife of sixty-four years, Rose, Sam is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Colin and Sharon, and Jeffrey and Brenda; one daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Walter Riewe.; five grandsons, Kevin (Kim), David (Marissa), Sheldon, Craig (Kara), and Richard (Kalin); as well as three great-grandchildren, Will, Desirea, and Matthew. Sam was predeceased by his parents, John Thomas Gilbert and Eliza Alice Willis; brothers, Fred, George, Les, and Johnny; and sisters, Lilian and Margaret. A Celebration of Sam’s Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Strathmore Branch (230 – 2 Avenue Strathmore, AB) on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
