Obituary of NICHOLSON – Helen Edith Nola
January 24, 1925 – May 29, 2010
Helen Nicholson of Calgary passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at the age of 85 years.
Helen was born in Halkirk, AB and grew up in Paradise Valley, AB during the depression. She moved with her family to Calgary where she attended Western Canada High School. After graduating, she attended Henderson’s Business College. Helen met and married her husband Bob after the war then moved to Turner Valley where she worked as a receptionist for Drs. Harry and Dave Landers. In 1953, the family moved back to Calgary. While her children were still young Helen started working at CHCT-TV – CFAC), initially in advertising then in production. She worked at the television station until her retirement in 1990. Helen participated with her husband as a square dancer at the opening ceremonies for the Calgary ’88 Olympics. She was an active member of Northminster United Church for more than fifty years and served in various capacities on their board of directors. She was a proud lifetime member of the United Church Women (UCW). In her later years she travelled throughout North America, the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, Asia, and the Middle East.
Helen is survived by her sister Bertha Sears; her daughter Jane and her husband Garry Wall; son Loyd and his wife Lesley; grandchildren, Kendra and Janel Wall, Rory, Aaron and Hayley Nicholson; nieces and nephews, Alex and Anne Witzaney, Pam Porodo(Sears), Michele Taylor (Sears); Jean Duker (McAfee), Merilyn King (McAfee), and Judy Chartrand (McAfee) and their children; and special friends, Gwen Ragon, Anne Klempa, Winona Haydu, Isabel Clarke, and Sheila Johnston. She was predeceased by her parents Mabel (Grey) and Loyd Pedden; husband Robert (Bob) Nicholson; and brothers and sisters, Margaret (McAfee), Alex, Dorothy (Witzaney), Allan, Jack, and Gordon.
Funeral Services will be held at Northminster United Church (3311 Centre Street North) on Friday, June 4, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
