Obituary of LAYNE – Ronald Allen

June 15, 1946 – May 17, 2010 Ronald (Ron) Allen Layne, passed away on Monday, May 17, 2010 at the age of 63 years. Born June 15, 1946 in Lethbridge, AB, he was raised in Picture Butte until he was 8. His family moved to a farm at Coronach, SK when his mother married his stepfather, Joe Shellstad. He moved to Calgary in the mid-sixties where he was employed at numerous jobs before joining Calgary Transit in January of 1977. He married Denise Vaile July 5, 1975. His pride and joy, Varian was born August 8, 1976. He retired from Transit in 2008 after over thirty years. He bought himself a motor home and planned to winter in Arizona and eventually travel the rest of the year. He was able to spend the winter of 2008/2009 in Phoenix. Ron loved bowling – he spent forty years bowling as well coaching the sport. He also enjoyed golfing, curling and of course cheering on his beloved Saskatchewan Roughriders and Calgary Flames. Ron will be missed by his beloved son Varian and daughter-in-law Colleen; his wife Denise; sisters, Audrey (Wilbur) and Diana (Brian); mother-in-law Muriel Vaile; as well as other in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Varian Layne in 1947; his stepfather Joe in 2004; his mother Lucille in 2005; and his father-in-law Rod Vaile in 2005. Ron will be remembered for his zest for life, his sense of humour and unwavering optimism as well as his courage and bravery during his last days. He was “the greatest” father who loved “family”. A Celebration of Ron’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
