Obituary of VOLK – Harry Bert

November 11, 1937 – May 14, 2010 Harry, beloved husband of Betty Volk of Calgary died Friday, May 14, 2010 after a long illness, at the age of 72. Harry was born on November 11, 1937 in Young, Saskatchewan and lived in a number of small towns, eventually settling in Saskatoon and attending High School. Harry joined the Air Cadets and later received his commission in the R.C.A.F., Squadron No. 406 as a pilot officer, flying Mitchell B25 and Harvards. Harry then moved to Los Angeles, CA to attend University and then taught flying at Rose Aviation. He then headed north to Calgary in the early 1970’s where he worked for Canadian Western Natural Gas Company. Harry was involved with the design of the Olympic Cauldrons for the Calgary Tower and Nikiska Village for the 1988 Olympics. Upon retiring from C.W.N.G. in 1994, he moved to Victoria, B.C., then Nanton, AB and finally returning to Calgary in 2005. Harry enjoyed designing, building and flying model airplanes. Over the years, Harry belonged to the Calgary, Victoria, and Nanton Air Museums. He also enjoyed English sports cars, and had owned many over the years including a Jaguar XKE and MGA. He was an enthusiastic Formula One race fan. Harry will be lovingly remembered by his wife Betty, Geoffrey, Cathy, Lucas and Matthew Pipe, Isabel and Dennis Roughley, Carol and Ted Bal and Jim Volk. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
