Obituary of NEWMAN – Charles Walter

October 18, 1931 – May 10, 2010 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Dad, Charles “Chuck” Newman of Medicine Hat, formerly of Calgary, on Monday, May 10, 2010 at the age of 78 years. Chuck was born October 18, 1931 in Omaha, Nebraska, the oldest child of Charles and Mary Newman. After several years of travelling and moving during the Depression era, the family settled in the Capitol Hill area in Seattle, WA. Dad had many fond memories of growing up with his brother Jerry, sister Mary Ann and later brother Bill. During these years he nurtured his love of all kinds of music (but especially Jazz, Big Band, Blues and Classical) and took up the saxophone and clarinet. He also began to foster his excellent craftsman and woodworking skills. Dad loved sharing stories of jamming with Quincy Jones and other musicians in his teen years at some of the local hot spots. A recent trip to Seattle included a trip to Capitol Hill, visits to great coffee shops and that “fire hydrant.’ His years in the service had him travel to the South Pacific, which he remembered fondly. In 1968, Chuck and his wife Sally moved their family, including daughters Anne and Gayle to Canada landing in White Bear, NL. Dad worked for Mannix (later Loram) Construction and the family moved from Newfoundland to Nordegg, AB, Mica Creek, B.C. and finally Calgary where his youngest daughter Ava was born. It was in Calgary where Dad realized his dream of owning a record store when he ran Hot Wax Records in Kensington for 20+ years. A true renaissance man, Dad was multi-talented and well-rounded. He loved the arts, history and theology – there were few subjects that he didn’t have an interest in. Dad could always be counted on for knowing the answer to any question. He always had one of the best kept yards in Silver Springs and looked forward to springtime when he could plan his beautiful gardens. He continued his gardening and woodworking when he retired to Medicine Hat, AB in 2007. Left to cherish his memory are his six daughters, Peggy (Don) Strain, Teresa Newman, Leslie Newman, Anne (Brad) Schneider, Gayle (Casey) MacDonald and Ava (Paul) Wheeler; his grandchildren, Kyle, Brittany, Braden, Sally Marie, Brett, Toni, Julie, Laura, Samantha and Shannon. He is also survived by his sister Mary Ann Newman and his brother Bill (Sue Ann) Newman. He will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, great grandchildren as well as Bernice, Phil, Chris and Rylea Stark. Chuck was predeceased by his beloved wife Sal, his parents, brother Jerry and grandson Chris.
