Obituary of CALLOW – Elizabeth Alethea

August 1, 1931 – May 8, 2010 Betty passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the age of 78 years. She was a native Calgarian, an avid photographer, and nature lover. Betty obtained a BA (1954) and a Teaching Certificate (1955) from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Calgary (1984). In the 1980’s, Betty served on the boards of Alberta based humanitarian organizations Farmers for Peace and Change for Children and worked tirelessly on social justice causes through her volunteer work with the United Church of Canada. She was a social worker with the City of Edmonton until her retirement, and then moved to Costa Rica for five years. After returning to Calgary, she became an active member of the West Hillhurst Go-Getters Senior Citizens Association. Betty is survived by her sons, Doug (Angie), Brian (Patti), and Bruce (Ana); and eight grandchildren, Brent, Cyndi, Erin, Jack, Kenny, Lara, Leah, and Tony. She is also survived by her brother Norm Barnecut (Gayle). A memorial service will be held at Parkdale United Church (2919 – 8th Avenue Northwest, Calgary, AB T2N-1C8) on Tuesday, May 18 at 1:30 pm with Reverend Tammy Allan officiating.
