Obituary of LAYE – Marvin Ronald

October 10, 1939 – April 26, 2010 Marvin (Marv) Ronald Laye passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 26, 2010 at the age of 70 years. Marvin was born in Maple Creek, SK on October 10, 1939. He spent his early years working around Hussar as well as working for his bother-in-law in Rocky Mountain House. He dedicated fifteen years to McMahon Stadium as Field Manager. Marvin was a courageous entrepreneur who built a successful Western Wear Store, Trailer Distribution Company, Towing Company, and Gas Bar/Car Wash. He played a vital role in the success of the 1988 Olympic Speed Skating, with his role at the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary. Marvin also spent three years as the Agricultural Co-ordinator for the Wesley Band and Manager of the Chief Goodstoney Arena. Most recently, his greatest success was the business he built with his son Jody. Marvin took great pride building Big Hill Services & Arena Supplies, and was a very successful Olympia Ice Resurfacer Dealer. Marvin spent many years with the Cochrane Lions Club, Cochrane Agricultural Society, and Cochrane Roping Club. He also dedicated his life to rodeo as a contestant/ judge/ organizer/ and spectator. He also enjoyed many years as a Back Stretch Judge at the Calgary Stampede Chuckwagon Races and the World Professional Chuckwagon Association. Marvin is survived by his two children, daughter Jacquie (Raymond) Winter; and son Jody (Sheri) Laye; his partner of ten years Leslie Noble McCleave; his sister Verna (Abe) Dyck; his grandchildren and many extended family and friends. Marvin had a very full and rewarding life.
