Obituary of SMITH – Christopher Roy

August 5, 1928– April 23, 2010 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Roy Smith of Calgary on Friday, April 23, 2010. Roy was born on August 5, 1928 in Manchester, England, where he lived and attended school. He immigrated to Canada in 1957 where he traveled through Canada and learned to love snow skiing. Roy settled in Calgary to be close to the mountains in 1959, when he met Marie. They married and raised their family. He enjoyed many pursuits outdoors such as soccer, football, camping, waterskiing and hiking. He was involved with both community and school activities before his retirement. Roy worked at Dominion Bridge until 1969 when he decided to return to University. He attended U of A where he obtained his Bachelor of Education. He then taught high school until moving to SAIT. Roy taught Structural Design and AutoCad at SAIT until his retirement in 1993. Roy and Marie became snowbirds, wintering in Arizona for six months every year for the next fifteen years. He was ahead of his time on computers so did much of the printing and organizing for their many groups, such as the weekly golf league and annual golf tournament. Besides Marie, his loving wife of fifty-two years, Roy’s memory will be cherished by his daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Kevin Ellis and Barbara and Craig Hamilton; his son and daughter-in-law Earl and Cindy Smith; and grandchildren, Cecily (Justin) Bills, Seth (Amy) Ellis, Bradley Smith, Heather Hamilton, Kira (Spencer) Call, Cory Hamilton, Scott Smith, Nathaniel Ellis and Jeff Hamilton. He is also survived by his sister Norma Kenyon; nephews Raymond (Mary) Betts and Peter (Lisa) Kenyon; niece Angela (Richard) Saunders; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Roy was predeceased by his brother Cyril, mother Minnie Smith and father Percy Smith. Funeral Services will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (703 Heritage Drive S.W.) on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
