Obituary of SPEAR – Mary

October 6, 1922 – April 18, 2010 Born in 1922 in Louth, Lincolnshire, England, Mary’s family moved to Calgary in 1934 and with the exception of four years in Lethbridge, she continued to live in Calgary until she passed away in her sleep on Sunday, April 18, 2010. The Matthews family first lived on 9a St and later 11a St and she attended Crescent Heights High School, and later, Henderson’s Business College. Mary worked at the CPR with Mr. Long who she always remembered fondly, but it was her many years working at DeMille’s Books and later WH Smith Books which was the highlight of her working life. She loved books and she loved reading and being surrounded by people who shared that interest made it less of a job and more of a pastime. Mary never forgot her British roots and enjoyed her trips back to visit England, especially her 1951-52 visit with her brother Peter. In 1949 she married Herb Spear at St. George in the Pines in Banff and they built a house in Glamorgan in 1958 where Herb still lives. Mary was predeceased by her brothers Peter and John Matthews, and her parents Ron and Elsie Matthews. She is survived by her husband Herb, son Michael (Monica), and daughter Judy Candy (Michael) and their children Patrick, Sydney and Nicole, sisters-in-Law Bev and Kay Matthews, Donna Spear, Carolyn Brooks and brother-in-law Peter (Barb) Spear, as well as several nephews and nieces. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, (1407 – 7 Avenue N.W.) on Monday, April 26, 2010 at 12:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Calgary Reads (www.calgaryreads.com ) or why not simply pick up a book and read one for Mary. In living memory of Mary Spear, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.
