Obituary of LUCY – Robert Edward, MBE, MC, ED

August 19, 1914 – April 14, 2010 Bob (Dad, ‘Poppa’, ‘Grandpa’, ‘Bullet’, ‘Colonel’, ‘Uncle Bob’) Lucy passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on Wednesday, April 14, and now joins his beloved Viola to spread smiles, mischief and good bridge hands with all their pals who have gone before them. Bob was raised in Calgary, tending to his bees, trapping gophers and riding his horse on the bald prairie not far from his home on 38 Ave & Elbow Drive. He was an Alberta badminton champ playing out of the Glencoe, and after graduating from St. Mary’s Boys high school and a few years in business, training began for the biggest adventure of all, WWII. Bob was a celebrated gunner and officer, with Field Marshall Montgomery pinning the Military Cross on Dad for unparalleled bravery. The enemy, a hundred yards away, had just killed his best friend, and they wouldn’t move. Major Lucy called all the guns of the Canadian 2nd Division to rain their firepower on the spot he stood. They moved. At home after the war he married Vi and began a family, and soon was a partner in Kelly Lucy Insurance Adjusting, working with Fred Kelly to build western Canada’s most noted firm. He loved the cabin he built for the family at Birch Bay, Sylvan Lake, and later on the beautiful house south of Calgary on WhitePost Lane. All the while he continued to work for the betterment of veterans as Chair of the Army Benevolent Fund, the Southern Alberta Corp of Commissionaires…. and until he was 88 yrs. old, driving for Meals on Wheels to deliver meals to the ‘old folks’, as he called his peers. Bob was a gentleman who everyone loved being around. In the bank, the grocery store, the garden centre, the hearing aid ‘joint’…. everywhere… all were attracted by his sparkle and gentle wit. The family would like to thank all who have been so kind to Dad over the last few years with your visits, tasty treats and the odd bottle of Rye. Bob’s life is celebrated by his children: Kathy (Ken), Robb (Kim), Sheila (Joe), Joan (Bob) & Brenda… as well as eight grandchildren (Kelli, Kim, Jody, Rodger, Kathryn, Rebecca, Robyn & Madison) and five great grandchildren (Brooke, Brett, Michael, Robby & Aidan). Dad is also loved and remembered by his friend and long-term caregiver, Arturo Cruz, as well as Dad’s recent daytime companion, Abdur Syed. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Monday, April 19, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E.) on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. If you’d like to remember Dad, he’d appreciate your donation to Christian Child Care International, (Chalice) Head Office: 445 Sackville Drive, Suite 1 Lower Sackville, NS B4C 2S1, 1-800-267-2923. We’d also like to thank the staff of the Colonel Belcher Residences, especially Derlito.
