Obituary of GOODWIN – Allan Richard

September 12, 1957 – April 9, 2010 On Friday, April 9, 2010, Allan was taken suddenly, and much too soon, from his loving family and friends. Allan is survived by his best friend and wife of twenty-nine years, Suzanne (nee Randall); and his four children, Kelsey 24, Andrew 23, Jillian 19 and Tim 18, all of Calgary. His family was his pride and joy, his life. Allan was the mentor and guiding light to his children, proven by his dedication to volunteering throughout the school years and his time spent as soccer, hockey, and life coach to all four children; no one could have asked for a better father. One of Allan’s greatest joys was the time spent at the family cabin in the Summer Village of Parkland Beach over the past thirteen years. Summers of boating, fishing, fireworks, family games, and awesome BBQs were spent with family and many great friends. His appetite for fun and sense of humour transferred to all aspects of his life: catching bats at the cabin, having the best Christmas lights on the block, rescuing his children and their friends from various predicaments, and happily being the target of many a joke are a few examples. Allan also treasured his family vacations to many sunny destinations where he proudly wore the most vibrant tie-dyed shirts, much to his children’s dismay. Allan’s love for his family extended to the family pets: Princess, Bailey, Millie and his best buddy Patches, the world’s greatest cat. Allan was born in Liverpool, NS. After attending Dalhousie University where he met Suzanne, the two travelled west to Alberta in 1980. Allan worked for Park Ambulance (Banff), and in 1981 started with the City of Calgary as an EMT. In 1985 Allan graduated from the SAIT Paramedic Program. Allan was dedicated and proud to be a paramedic, loving his profession. Progressing to Field Superintendent after many years on the street, Allan’s most recent position was Supervisor, Planning & Preparedness, EMS for the Alberta Health Services. His integrity, patience and dedication were an inspiration to all. One of Allan’s greatest attributes was his calming effect when life around him was chaotic, witnessed both at home and at work. The youngest of three children, Allan is survived by sisters and brother-in-law, Susan of Bridgewater, NS and Judi (Kedy) and Gerald and their children Erin and Scott, of Halifax, NS. Allan is also survived by his extended Randall Family, both in Calgary and Nova Scotia, who considered him one of their own. Allan was predeceased by his parents Raymond and Bernice (Penney) Goodwin.
