Obituary of CAYEN – Peter

(Chief of All) August 22, 1929 – March 24, 2010 Peter Cayen passed away suddenly at the Foothills Medical Centre on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at the age of 80 years, surrounded by his family and friends. Peter went to meet the love of his life “Evelyn”. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Elsie-Winnie Smith, Shirley, Karen, Eldon, Wanda (Dean) Turning Robe, Audrey (Alfred) Whitehawk, Shannon (Shane); eighteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He also leaves his siblings, Florence Calf Child (nee Cayenne), Maureena (Leo Jr.) Pretty Youngman, Angie (Delmar) Holloway, Cindy, Irvin, Larry and Anthony (Dino) Scalplock; adopted family, Dwayne and Joan Whitehawk, Radford Blackrider, Caroline Drunken Chief, Gerald Seaton and Charity Red Gun; and numerous nephews and nieces – too many to mention. He was predeceased by his loving wife Evelyn; parents John and Mary Jane Cayen and Anthony Scalplock Sr.; siblings, Alex, Arthur and Wilton Scalplock, Frank Sr., Jimmy, Joe, Mabel, Rosie Cayenne, Norma Cat Face (nee Cayenne) and Henry Back Fat Sr.; and in-laws, Patrick and Maggie (nee Big Snake) Drunken Chief, Jane, Emma, Ethel, Dorothy, Pauline, Jim, and Gary. The family would like to apologize to anyone that we might have missed. Pete was born in Brooks, AB, was raised on the Siksika Nation and grew up amongst Blackfoot elders who taught him to be fluent in the Blackfoot language, culture, and traditional way of life. He had in-depth knowledge of Siksika culture and the “old ways” and contributed his knowledge to the Nation. He attended Crowfoot Residential School. Peter was considered a “Go-getter”, didn’t sit around, always grabbed the bull by the horns and got active and involved. Pete also volunteered his service in the “Canadian Army” as a trained Militiaman and Rescue Operations recruit of which his family were very proud. His greatest achievements were in rodeo, pool and hand game tournaments. He was also an avid outdoor sportsman where he excelled in hunting, trapping, fishing and berry picking and worked as a ranch hand throughout Southern Alberta and the Calgary Stampede. Pete instilled his traditional beliefs and ways of life in his children and grandchildren and had a very loving heart which will be a legacy for his family to pass on. Wake Services will be held at the residence of Pete Cayen at South Camp on Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (Siksika Nation, AB) on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Crowfoot Cemetery (Siksika Nation, AB).
