Obituary of SPENCER – Howard George

September 22, 1918 – March 24, 2010 Howard Spencer, resident of Colonel Belcher, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at the age of 91 years. Howard is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Larry Caine; son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Anne Spencer; two granddaughters, Rachel and her husband Scott Widdifield and Sarah Caine; great-granddaughter Brooklyn Widdifield as well as Anne’s daughters, Jenna and Meagan Loewen. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Muriel Spencer as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Nigel and Harriet Spencer; his first wife Dorothy (nee White); second wife June (nee Fulkerson), four sisters, Gladys Nelson, Mabel Harren, Ethel Byars, and Irene Houston and two infant brothers, Nigel and Lloyd. Born in Saskatchewan, he grew up near Penzance on the family farm. He served in the Air Force during World War II as an aircraft mechanic. He then returned to Saskatchewan and operated the Penzance Garage with his uncle George Barton. In 1947, Howard married Dorothy White from Holdfast, Sask. and they raised their daughter and son in Penzance. They moved to Moose Jaw, Sask. in 1961 where he taught Motor Mechanics at the Saskatchewan Technical Institute. When Dorothy passed away in 1978 he retired and moved to Calgary to be near his children. After his move to Calgary Howard married June Fulkerson, whom he had met in Ontario during the War. Howard and June were active in their retirement, with camping, hiking, and participating with various senior organizations. They especially enjoyed the time they spent at their cottage in Salmon Arm. They eventually moved to the Colonel Belcher Seniors Residence. June passed away in 2008. In his last year Dad was lovingly cared for at the CareWest Colonel Belcher. The family wishes to express a deep appreciation to all the staff for the excellent care that he received.
