Obituary of HORN – Andrew McRae

April 24,1938 – March 12, 2010 Andrew McRae Horn passed away peacefully at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in the late afternoon of Friday, March 12 at the age of 71. He was better known to his many friends as Scotty – so named from his birthplace of Dunfermline, Fife in Scotland. Scotty was predeceased by his parents Robert and Mildred Horn (MacFarlane) and his sister Catherine Robertson. He is survived by his brother John of Cowley, AB; sister in law Evelyn of Pincher Creek, AB; niece Sheona (Terry Bonertz) and their children Amy, Alissa and Dalton of Twin Butte, AB; nephew Robert of Pincher Creek; brother in law, Anthony Philip (Bill) Robertson of Upminster, Essex, England; niece Jennifer (Michel Pierotti) of Paris, France and their daughter Marie-Charlotte; and nephew Macrae (Mac) Robertson (wife Karen) of Colchester (England). Scotty was a great storyteller and many will have listened to him spin a yarn from his full life as a cowboy, traveler and friend. Scotty began to gather stories, adventures and friends during his early years in Crail, Scotland where his parents, owned a hotel and pub and he would ‘run off’ with the fisherman going out for the day. At the age of 16, Scotty set off from his homeland to begin his life as a Cowboy in the Australian outback. He immigrated to Canada as a young man in his early 20’s and then returned to Australia for several years before calling the foothills ranch country of Alberta his home. Scotty’s stories covered his experiences in the Australian desert, at Otis Elevator (building the Calgary Tower), shoeing horses, leading trail rides in the Rockies’, looking after Polo ponies in the US and cowboying for several ranches in BC and Alberta, where he finally found his home for the last fourteen years at The Big Loop Cattle Co. in Longview, Alberta. Scotty’s first love was horses and riding the range, but he also loved adventure and travel, raising a glass with friends while sharing tales of his many experiences and his beautiful leather braiding can be found all over this country and several others. Scotty has given all of us many memories, much laughter and love. We will miss him. A celebration of Scotty’s life will be held on his birthday, April 24, 2010 at the Longview Community Hall (main street) at 1 pm.
